Stove Repair When a Burner Won’t Light or Heat
One burner is dead, the other three are fine, and every meal has turned into a juggling act. Or the igniter clicks all day like a metronome, or a crack has spread across the glass top and you’re not sure it’s safe to use. Cooktop problems rarely announce themselves with an error code. They just quietly take away the burner you use most.
Richmond Appliance Guys offers stove repair services in Richmond, VA for gas and electric stoves, freestanding and slide-in ranges, and cooktops set into a countertop. We’re locally owned, based in Mechanicsville, and our three technicians work in the same Greater Richmond neighborhoods they live in. Since 2020 we’ve built our reputation on diagnosing the actual problem, explaining it in plain language, and giving you the price before any work begins. If the honest answer is that your range is not worth fixing, we’ll tell you that too.
Electric Stove and Cooktop Symptoms
Electric cooktops come in two styles, exposed coil elements and radiant elements under a smooth glass top, and they fail in different ways.
- One coil burner won’t heat or only heats on high. The element itself can burn out, but just as often the problem is the receptacle it plugs into or the infinite switch behind the knob that cycles power to it.
- A smooth-top burner stays cold or glows in only part of the ring. Radiant elements under the glass fail outright or in sections. A burner that never shuts off, even on low, points to a switch that has welded closed.
- The indicator light stays on with everything off. A stuck switch or a shorted element can keep the hot-surface light lit and the burner powered.
- Cracked or chipped glass top. A crack can let spills reach the elements and wiring underneath. Stop using the cooktop until we’ve looked at it.
- Burners work intermittently or a breaker trips. Loose or heat-damaged wiring at the element terminals and a failing switch are the common causes.

- A burner clicks but won’t light. The spark is there but the gas isn’t reaching it, or the flame won’t hold. A clogged burner port, a misaligned burner cap, or a weak spark can each cause this.
- The igniter keeps clicking after the burner is lit. Moisture in the spark electrode, a cracked igniter, or a spark module that isn’t sensing the flame will keep it firing.
- No spark at any burner. When every burner is dead at once, the spark module or the power feeding it is the usual culprit rather than five bad igniters.
- Yellow, orange, or uneven flames. A dirty burner or an air mixture problem shows up as a lazy, sooty flame instead of a crisp blue one. Persistent yellow flames deserve a look.
- You smell gas. If the smell is strong or doesn’t clear when the burners are off, leave the house and call your gas utility first. Once it’s safe, call us to find the cause.
What We Check on the Cooktop Surface
Our technician starts with the burner you reported and works outward. On electric ranges that means testing the surface elements, the receptacles they plug into, the infinite switches that control heat level, the radiant elements and their limiters under a glass top, the terminal block where power enters the range, and the wiring harness between them. On gas ranges we check the spark igniters at each burner, the spark module that fires them, the burner caps and heads for alignment and blockage, the valves behind the knobs, and the wiring that ties them together.
We also handle the parts you touch every day: knobs that spin freely on a stripped valve stem, control lockouts that won’t release, touch controls on a smooth top that ignore you, and hot-surface indicator lights. Cracked glass tops can be replaced on many models, and we’ll tell you whether that makes sense for yours. If the range hood above the stove has a fan or light problem, our microwave and range hood repair page covers that.
Freestanding, Slide-In, and Drop-In Ranges
Most Richmond kitchens have a freestanding range, but slide-in and drop-in models are common in newer homes and remodels, and cooktops set into a countertop with a separate wall oven show up in plenty of homes across the area. We service all of them. The cooktop diagnosis is the same; what changes is the access, and we plan for it.
A range is one appliance with two halves. This page covers the top half. If your trouble is inside the oven itself, whether it won’t heat, bakes unevenly, won’t hold temperature, or has a door or self-clean lock problem, that’s on our oven repair page. One visit can cover both if you have problems in both places; just let our office know when you book.
Stove Brands We Repair
We repair stoves, ranges, and cooktops from GE, Frigidaire, Electrolux, Whirlpool, Roper, Maytag, JennAir, KitchenAid, LG, and Samsung. LG and Samsung slide-in ranges and glass cooktops are a specialty of ours, and their touch controls and radiant element layouts are something our technicians work on regularly. If you have an induction cooktop, give our office the brand and model when you call and we’ll confirm we work on it before booking.
One thing we don’t do: we don’t install ranges or cooktops, and we never connect or modify gas lines. If a new gas range needs to be hooked up, a plumber or your gas utility handles that.
What Happens on a Stove Repair Visit
Call 804-773-0784, Monday through Friday from 8 AM to 5 PM, or use the request form on our contact page. Tell our customer service representative which burners are affected, whether the range is gas or electric, and the model number if you can find it. On most ranges the tag is inside the storage drawer opening or on the frame behind the oven door, and our model number locator shows you where to look on yours. We’ll book you into a weekday window, 9 AM to noon or 1 PM to 4 PM.
The service call and diagnostic fee is $125. Our technician diagnoses the problem, explains what failed, and gives you the repair price. If you go ahead, the $125 is applied to the repair. Completed repairs are backed by a 90-day labor warranty and a 1-year parts warranty. If you decide the range isn’t worth fixing, you’ve paid for an honest answer and nothing more.
Fix the Stove or Replace the Range?
Cooktop repairs are usually good value. Surface elements, switches, igniters, spark modules, and knobs cost little relative to a new range, and replacing one restores the whole cooktop. Even a cracked glass top can be worth replacing on a range that’s otherwise in good shape and only a few years old.
We start leaning toward replacement when a glass top has cracked on an older range with other wear, when the main control on a touch-control cooktop has failed and the part is scarce, or when the oven side has problems too and the total climbs past what a comparable new range would cost. We’ll lay out the numbers and let you decide.
Rental Kitchens and Property Managers
A stove is one of the few appliances a landlord is expected to keep working, and tenants notice fast when a burner dies. We work with property managers across Greater Richmond: we’ll coordinate the appointment with your tenant, call the person who signs off on the repair before we proceed, and send documentation of what we found and fixed. For a range that has been repaired before and is failing again, we’ll be candid about whether the unit should be replaced at the next turnover.
