Dishwasher Repair Services in Richmond and the Surrounding Counties

You run the dishwasher overnight, open it in the morning, and find an inch of gray water sitting in the bottom. Or the glasses come out cloudy and gritty. Or the floor in front of it has gone soft, and you’re hoping that isn’t what you think it is. A dishwasher problem is easy to put off because you can always wash by hand, but leaks don’t fix themselves, and a dishwasher that’s half working costs you time every single day. Good dishwasher repair in Richmond, VA starts with finding the real cause, and that’s where we begin.

Richmond Appliance Guys is a locally owned appliance repair shop based in Mechanicsville, serving homeowners, landlords, and property managers across Greater Richmond. We work on standard built-in dishwashers, front-control and top-control, including tall-tub and third-rack models. Our technicians diagnose first, explain what they found, and quote the repair before touching a part.

Dishwasher Problems We Fix

  • Won’t drain. Standing water at the end of the cycle points to the drain pump, a clogged filter, a kinked or blocked drain hose, a stuck check valve, or a garbage disposal connection that’s plugged.
  • Leaks. Water on the floor can come from the door gasket, a cracked spray arm throwing water at the door, a worn pump seal, the water inlet valve, a stuck float, or a loose hose connection.
  • Dishes come out dirty. Clogged spray arm holes, a weak wash pump or circulation motor, a detergent door that won’t open, water that isn’t getting hot enough, or a dishwasher that isn’t filling with enough water.
  • Dishes come out wet. A heating element that has failed, a vent or fan that has stopped, or a rinse aid dispenser that’s empty or broken.
  • Won’t start or nothing lights up. The door latch and door switch, the control board, a blown thermal fuse, or a keypad that has stopped responding.
  • Door won’t latch or falls open. A worn latch assembly, broken door springs or cables, or a bent strike plate.
  • Loud grinding, buzzing, or humming. Debris in the pump or chopper, a failing pump motor, or a spray arm hitting a rack.
  • Error codes. LG and Samsung dishwashers, and newer models from every brand, flash codes for fill, drain, heating, and leak-sensor problems. We read them and confirm the cause rather than swapping parts on a hunch.
  • Smells. Almost always a dirty filter, food trapped in the sump, or water sitting in the drain hose.

If your dishwasher is actively leaking, turn off the water at the shutoff under the sink if you know where it is, and stop running it until we’ve had a look.

Dishwasher Repair, On the Job

What We Test Inside a Dishwasher

Our technician starts by confirming the symptom and running the dishwasher through the relevant part of its cycle. On a drain complaint, that means checking the filter and sump, listening to the drain pump, and tracing the hose to the sink or disposal. On a cleaning complaint, it means checking incoming water temperature and fill level, spray arm condition, and pump performance. On a leak, it means finding the source, which is often not where the water shows up.

Components we test and replace regularly include drain pumps, circulation pumps and wash motors, water inlet valves, float switches, door gaskets, door latches and switches, heating elements, thermostats and thermal fuses, spray arms, detergent dispensers, control boards, and user interface panels. Most of these are reasonable repairs on a dishwasher that is otherwise in good condition.

Dishwasher Brands We Repair

We service dishwashers from GE, Frigidaire, Electrolux, Whirlpool, Roper, Maytag, JennAir, KitchenAid, LG, and Samsung. LG and Samsung are a particular strength. Their dishwashers lean on electronic controls, leak sensors, and diagnostic codes that reward a technician who works on them regularly, and we do. If your dishwasher is a brand not on this list, our office will tell you when you call so you don’t spend a diagnostic fee on a unit we can’t help with.

What a Dishwasher Repair Visit Looks Like

Call 804-773-0784 or send a request through our contact page. We’ll ask for the brand, the model number (it’s on a tag on the edge of the door or the side of the door frame, visible when the door is open), your address, and what’s happening. Our customer service representative confirms we work on your model and books you into the next open weekday window: 9 AM to noon or 1 PM to 4 PM, Monday through Friday.

Our technician arrives, diagnoses the dishwasher, and walks you through the cause and the cost. The service call and diagnostic fee is $125, and it’s applied to the repair if you go ahead. You approve the work before we start it, and every completed repair comes with a 90-day labor warranty and a 1-year parts warranty. Clearing the cabinet under the sink before we arrive helps, since that’s where the drain and water connections live.

When to Repair a Dishwasher and When to Replace It

A drain pump, a latch, a gasket, an inlet valve, or a heating element is a sensible repair on almost any dishwasher that’s under about ten years old and otherwise in decent shape. The math changes when the tub is cracked or rusted through, when the pump motor and control board are both failing, or when a repair would cost a large share of what a comparable new dishwasher runs. We’ll tell you where your dishwasher lands and let you decide. If you choose a new one, our dishwasher installation service sets it, connects the water and drain lines, installs the power cord, levels it, and tests it, so you’re not hunting for a separate installer.

Dishwasher Cleaning and Filter Service

Most dishwashers built in the last fifteen years have a removable filter in the bottom of the tub instead of a hard food disposer, and a filter that has never been cleaned is behind a surprising number of “my dishwasher stopped cleaning” and “my dishwasher stinks” calls. We offer dishwasher cleaning and filter service as part of our appliance maintenance visits: we clean the filter and sump and make sure the dishwasher is draining and spraying the way it should. It’s a sensible add-on to any dishwasher repair visit and a good habit for rentals between tenants.

A Word for Landlords and Property Managers

Dishwasher leaks are the kind of problem that turns into a flooring claim when a tenant ignores them, so it’s worth getting on our calendar promptly. Give our office the tenant’s contact for access, tell us who approves the repair price, and we’ll handle the coordination and send you a written summary of what we found and what we did. If the dishwasher is a lost cause, we’ll say so, and we can install its replacement on a later visit.

Call Richmond Appliance Guys at 804-773-0784, Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, or request an appointment online and our office will confirm the next available weekday window. If the trouble seems to sit on the other side of the sink, our garbage disposal repair service covers jams, leaks, and a disposal that’s backing water into the dishwasher. Dishwasher Repair FAQs

Why is there standing water in the bottom of my dishwasher after the cycle?

The dishwasher finished washing but couldn't pump the water out. The usual causes are a clogged filter or sump, a drain pump that has failed, a drain hose that is kinked or blocked, a stuck check valve, or a garbage disposal connection that is plugged. We check each point along that path and fix the one that's actually blocking it.

My dishes come out dirty or gritty. Is that a repair problem or a loading problem?

It can be either, and we'll tell you honestly which one. Clogged spray arms, a weak wash pump, a detergent door that won't open, water that isn't hot enough, or a low fill level are repair issues. If the dishwasher tests fine and the problem is loading or detergent, you'll hear that too, and you'll only be out the diagnostic fee.

Why won't my dishwasher dry the dishes anymore?

Most dishwashers dry with a heating element, a vent or fan, and rinse aid working together, and when one fails the dishes come out wet. We test the element and its circuit, check the vent, and confirm the rinse aid dispenser is releasing. Some newer models rely on condensation drying and were never meant to dry plastic well, and we'll explain that if it applies to yours.

The door won't latch, or the dishwasher won't start. What do you look at?

A dishwasher won't run unless the door switch tells the control the door is closed, so a worn latch or switch is the first suspect. If the latch is fine and nothing lights up, we test the control board, the thermal fuse, and the power to the unit. If the door drops open on its own, that's usually broken door springs or cables.

Do you install dishwashers if mine needs to be replaced?

Yes. Dishwasher installation is one of the few installations we offer. We connect the water and drain lines, install the power cord, level the unit, and test it for leaks before we leave. If your repair visit ends with a replacement recommendation, our office can schedule the installation.
