Refrigerator Ice Maker Repair Across Greater Richmond
The ice maker is the part of the refrigerator you don’t think about until the bin is empty. Then you notice everything: cubes the size of a thumbnail, a sheet of ice welded across the tray, a dispenser that groans and gives you nothing, a slow drip staining the cabinet below. An ice maker is a small appliance living inside a bigger one, and it fails in its own particular ways, which is why ice maker repair in Richmond, VA deserves a technician who works on them every week.
Richmond Appliance Guys repairs the ice makers built into refrigerators and freezers: the classic ice maker in the freezer compartment, the door-mounted ice maker on French door models, and the through-the-door dispenser that delivers the ice and water. We’re based in Mechanicsville and serve homeowners, landlords, and property managers across Greater Richmond with straightforward pricing and repairs that make sense. Our ice maker repair services cover the brands you’ll find in most local kitchens, with particular depth in LG and Samsung.
Common Ice Maker Problems, and What They Usually Mean
- No ice at all, but the freezer is cold. The ice maker isn’t getting water or isn’t cycling. We look at the water inlet valve, the fill tube (which can freeze solid), the water filter, and the ice maker’s sensor or control module.
- Cubes are small, hollow, or come out as a thin shell. Not enough water is reaching the tray. Low household water pressure, a clogged filter, a partly blocked valve, or a fill tube that’s icing up.
- Ice comes out in one solid clump. The bin isn’t emptied often enough and the cubes are melting slightly and refreezing, or warm air is getting into the ice compartment through a bad seal.
- The ice maker is frozen over. Frost and ice buildup on the ice maker or in the ice compartment, most common on door-mounted units. Usually air leaking in around a gasket or a chute flap that isn’t closing.
- Ice tastes or smells off. An overdue water filter, or food odors migrating through the freezer.
- The dispenser won’t drop ice or grinds without delivering. The auger motor, the dispenser door, the solenoid, or ice fused together in the bucket.
- Water leaking from the ice maker or pooling in the bin. A valve that isn’t closing fully, a cracked fill cup, or an ice maker that’s overfilling because a sensor has drifted.
- Ice production is slow. The freezer isn’t cold enough for the ice maker to cycle, the filter is restricting flow, or the ice maker itself is wearing out.

Schedule Serviceor call 804-773-0784The Parts Behind the Ice: What We Test
An ice maker is a simple machine that depends on several other things being right: water pressure, freezer temperature, a working valve, and an intact seal around its compartment. Our technician checks those first, because replacing the ice maker won’t help if the freezer is running warm or the valve is starving it of water.
From there we test the components themselves: the water inlet valve and the pressure reaching it, the fill tube and fill cup, the ice mold and its heater, the thermistor or optic sensor that tells the ice maker when to harvest, the ejector arm or motor module, the auger motor and dispenser assembly, the chute door and its heater, and the wiring harness that runs into the door on door-mounted units. If the refrigerator’s control board is what’s holding things up, we’ll find that too.
Many ice maker repairs come down to a valve, a sensor, or the ice maker assembly itself, all of which can be replaced without touching the rest of the refrigerator. If the real problem turns out to be the refrigerator’s cooling, we’ll tell you, and our refrigerator repair service picks up from there.
LG and Samsung Door Ice Makers
Ask anyone who owns an LG or Samsung French door refrigerator and they’ll tell you the ice maker in the door is the part that gives them trouble. These units sit in the refrigerator door rather than the freezer, so they depend on a tightly sealed compartment and a small cooling duct to stay cold. When frost sneaks in, the ice maker freezes up, production drops, and eventually the auger jams or the tray stops turning. LG and Samsung are a specialty for us, and door ice makers are a big part of why. We know the seal points, the duct and drain issues, the sensor behavior, and which repairs hold up. Give us the model number and a description of what it’s doing and we’ll come prepared.
Types of Ice Makers We Repair (and the Ones We Don’t)
We repair the ice makers that live inside a residential refrigerator or freezer: freezer-compartment ice makers on top-freezer, bottom-freezer, and side-by-side models; door-mounted ice makers on French door models; dual ice makers on refrigerators that have both; and the ice maker in an upright freezer. Brands we service are GE, Frigidaire, Electrolux, Whirlpool, Roper, Maytag, JennAir, KitchenAid, LG, and Samsung.
To save you a call, here’s what we don’t service: standalone ice machines, undercounter and built-in ice makers (the kind installed in a wet bar or outdoor kitchen), and the ice makers inside built-in refrigerators. Those are different machines with their own refrigeration systems and belong with a specialist in that equipment.
Booking an Ice Maker Repair Visit
Have the refrigerator’s model number handy when you call 804-773-0784 or fill out the request form on our contact page. The ice maker doesn’t carry a model number that helps us; we need the refrigerator’s, which is on a tag inside the fresh food section. Our model number locator shows where to look by brand. Our customer service representative will confirm we work on your model and book the next available weekday window, 9 AM to noon or 1 PM to 4 PM.
The service call and diagnostic fee is $125 and covers our technician’s full diagnosis of the ice maker and the systems feeding it. You’ll get a plain explanation and a price before any part is replaced, and if you approve the repair, the $125 goes toward it. Completed repairs are backed by our 90-day labor warranty and 1-year parts warranty.
Not sure whether the problem is the ice maker or the refrigerator itself? A Virtual Appliance Diagnostic Call is a good first step. For $50, one of our technicians looks at the problem with you over video, and the $50 is credited toward the diagnostic fee if we need to come out.
Fix the Ice Maker or Replace the Refrigerator?
Almost never the refrigerator. An ice maker failure on its own is a component problem, and the ice maker assembly, valve, or sensor can be replaced for a fraction of what a new refrigerator costs. It gets less clear with an older refrigerator whose door ice maker has frozen up repeatedly, or a model whose ice maker parts are getting hard to find. In that case we’ll lay out the options: repair it again, live without the ice maker and use trays, or put the money toward a new refrigerator. Our technician will give you an honest read rather than push the repair.
Ice Makers in Rental Properties
Ice makers are a frequent tenant complaint and a low priority for most owners, until the leak from a bad valve shows up in the flooring. If you manage rentals, we can schedule directly with your tenant, confirm the price with you before we proceed, and send you a written record of the repair for your file. Tell our office at booking who approves the work and who to call for access.
